Description
This watercolor painting depicts a serene seaside scene, where tall trees line a sunlit path overlooking calm, blue-green water of a small bay in Thassos, Greece. The composition emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow, with the white of the paper preserved to create highlights and luminosity throughout the landscape. The foreground features a sandy path running along the right side, painted with warm ochre and brown washes. Shadows from the trees fall across the path, created with darker tones and softened edges. To the left, grasses and undergrowth are painted with layered greens, using dry brush and stippling to suggest texture. Small untouched areas of paper create sparkling highlights that mimic sunlight on the blades of grass. The trees dominate the middle ground, their trunks painted with strong vertical strokes in deep browns and grays. The foliage is rendered with overlapping washes of green and yellow, applied in both wet-on-wet and dry brush techniques. The preserved white of the paper shines through the leaves, suggesting sunlight filtering through the canopy. The sea stretches across the left side of the composition, painted with transparent washes of turquoise, blue, and green.
