Mood and Inspiration

I painted “Secluded Beach” original watercolor painting after visiting a quiet bay in Thassos, Greece. The path along the water caught my attention because of how the trees filtered sunlight onto the sandy ground. I wanted to capture that specific quality of Mediterranean light—bright, warm, and creating strong contrasts between sun and shade. The calm turquoise water and the tree-lined path created a sense of seclusion and tranquility. This painting reflects my interest in coastal landscapes where nature feels undisturbed. The scene invites viewers to imagine walking along that sunlit path with the sea visible through the trees.

Artistic Details

I used transparent watercolor washes to build the composition, preserving the white of the paper for highlights throughout. The sandy path runs along the right side, painted with warm ochre and brown washes. Tree shadows fall across it with darker tones and softened edges. The tree trunks required strong vertical strokes in deep browns and grays. I rendered the foliage with overlapping washes of green and yellow, using both wet-on-wet and dry brush techniques. The preserved white paper shines through the leaves, suggesting filtered sunlight. The sea stretches across the left side with transparent turquoise, blue, and green washes. Horizontal brushstrokes suggest calm water, while the paper’s brightness creates a shimmering quality. I painted the distant forest in muted blue-greens with soft edges for atmospheric perspective. The grasses and undergrowth use layered greens with dry brush and stippling for texture.
