Description
This watercolor painting depicts a woodland waterfall cascading over moss-covered rocks, surrounded by lush greenery and autumn light. It’s the beautiful Bigăr Waterfall in Romania’s Banat region. The composition captures both the movement of water and the stillness of the forest, with the white of the paper used to create highlights and the sparkle of flowing water. The foreground shows the base of the waterfall, where water splashes into a dark pool painted with deep washes of black, blue, and brown. Small droplets are suggested with untouched white paper, giving the impression of spray and movement. The midground is dominated by the rocky cliff face, painted in earthy browns and greens. Moss and vegetation cling to the rocks, created with layered washes and textured brushwork. The waterfall itself flows in thin, bright streams, where the white of the paper forms the luminous highlights of the falling water. The background glows with autumn foliage, painted in vibrant yellows and greens. The canopy is rendered with loose, stippled brushstrokes, while the untouched paper creates the effect of sunlight filtering through the leaves. A wooden fence runs across the top of the cliff, painted in dark strokes that contrast with the brightness of the foliage. The trees rise tall above the waterfall, their trunks painted in layered browns and grays. Branches extend outward, some defined with fine lines, others softened into the foliage. The technique combines transparent washes for the rocks and water, stippling and splattering for foliage texture, and careful preservation of the paper’s white for highlights and flowing streams.
