Description

This original watercolor artwork shows a few fir trees reflecting in a small lake in Romania’s Fagaras Mountains on a spring day. This painting portrays a tranquil forest pond surrounded by evergreen trees and scattered rocks. The composition is vertically oriented, with the reflective water in the foreground and dense conifers rising in the background. The trees are rendered with fine, layered brushstrokes that suggest the texture of pine needles, while broader, softer strokes create the impression of depth and shadow within the forest. The rocks are painted with firmer, angular strokes, giving them solidity and contrast against the softer foliage. The layered washes create atmosphere and reflection. In the pond, transparent washes of green, brown, and hints of blue overlap to suggest both the water’s depth and the stones beneath its surface. The reflections of the trees are achieved through diluted, downward washes, blending seamlessly into the water’s surface. The background employs light, diffused washes of earthy tones, producing a misty, atmospheric effect that pushes the trees forward in the composition. The technique balances wet-on-wet blending for soft transitions in the water and background with dry brush applications for sharper textures in the trees and rocks. This interplay of methods enhances the natural realism of the scene while maintaining the fluid, luminous qualities of watercolor.
