Description

This watercolor painting depicts a dramatic sunset over a calm sea, with expansive cloud formations dominating the sky and reflecting light onto the surface below, in Vourvourou, Halkidiki, Greece. The composition emphasizes the grandeur of the sky, which occupies the majority of the frame, while the distant mountains and waterline provide grounding and balance. The sky is rendered with a wide spectrum of colors, transitioning from deep indigo and violet in the upper clouds to fiery oranges, yellows, and golds near the horizon. Wet-on-wet blending creates smooth gradations between these tones, while layered glazing intensifies the saturation in key areas, giving the clouds depth and movement. Subtle lifting techniques preserve highlights, suggesting light breaking through the cloud cover. The clouds themselves are painted with expressive brushwork, combining soft diffusions with sharper edges to convey their shifting, layered forms. Cooler tones in the upper sky contrast with the warm glow of the horizon, enhancing the sense of atmospheric depth and distance. The water reflects the brilliance of the sunset, with horizontal strokes of orange, gold, and crimson layered over cooler undertones of violet and blue. Wet-on-dry brushwork defines the rippling surface, while the mirrored colors create a luminous, glowing effect. Small buoys and a silhouetted boat add detail and rhythm, guiding the viewer’s eye across the expanse of water.
