“Traditional Romanian House in Sibiu Village Museum” original watercolor painting
Mood and Inspiration
I painted the “Traditional Romanian House in Sibiu Village Museum” original watercolor painting after visiting the Sibiu Village Museum, where traditional Romanian architecture is preserved. The house façade caught my attention because of how the climbing vines softened the structure’s geometry. I wanted to capture that relationship between built form and organic growth. The vibrant blue wall contrasts with the weathered gray roof and lush greenery. This painting reflects my interest in vernacular architecture and how nature reclaims human spaces over time. The scene feels both lived-in and timeless, showing how traditional buildings integrate with their natural surroundings.
Artistic Details
I created this watercolor in 2024 on Fabriano Artistico hot-pressed cotton paper (300g, 30×45 cm). The roof required broad horizontal strokes in muted grays and browns, with layered washes to suggest light and shadow across the shingles. I applied the blue wall with loose, fluid washes that create tonal variations and texture. The climbing vine became the most dynamic element. I used wet-on-dry strokes for sharper leaf shapes and wet-on-wet blending for softer transitions. Layered greens build up the foliage density, with yellow touches suggesting filtered sunlight. The wooden balcony and planters are rendered in warm browns, with precise vertical strokes for the railing. Throughout the painting, I alternated between controlled precision for architectural elements and expressive layered brushwork for foliage.
Why It Belongs in Your Space
“Traditional Romanian House in Sibiu Village Museum” original watercolor painting works well in spaces that appreciate cultural heritage or architectural subjects. The vertical composition suits narrow spaces or entryways. It was exhibited at Ion Mincu Architecture University in April 2024 as part of the “Architecture and traditionalism” show. The piece offers a study in how traditional structures and natural elements coexist, making it suitable for homes or offices interested in vernacular architecture or Romanian cultural themes.
