“Blue Galaxy”- transparent White Nights watercolours on Canson Aquarelle cellulose paper, 300 g, 29x42cm. 2020.
Description
This watercolor painting depicts a luminous night sky filled with stars, with the Milky Way stretching diagonally across the composition. The scene captures the vastness and mystery of the cosmos, contrasted against the dark silhouette of a forested landscape below. The sky is rendered with layered washes of deep blues, teals, and purples, applied wet-on-wet to create smooth transitions and a sense of atmospheric depth. The Milky Way is suggested through a diagonal band of lighter tones—lavender, turquoise, and soft white—blended seamlessly to evoke the glowing density of distant stars. The use of salt or spattering techniques creates organic textures within the washes, enhancing the impression of cosmic dust and nebulae. Stars are depicted with fine splatters of white pigment, scattered across the sky in varying densities. Some are concentrated within the central band of the Milky Way, while others are dispersed more sparsely, creating a naturalistic sense of depth and distance. A few brighter stars stand out, achieved through controlled dabs of opaque white, adding focal points within the expanse. The foreground consists of silhouetted pine trees and a low mountain ridge, painted in flat, dark washes of black and deep green. Their sharp, angular forms contrast with the softness of the sky, grounding the composition and providing scale. The repetition of tree shapes creates rhythm, while their placement along the bottom edge frames the celestial display above. The overall composition emphasizes verticality and diagonal movement, guiding the viewer’s eye upward through the glowing band of the Milky Way. The balance between the dark, solid foreground and the luminous, textured sky enhances the sense of awe and immensity.
